Consider your goals: If backup power and evening usage are priorities, batteries + hybrid inverter make an excellent combination.

Question 7

What is Net-Metering in Cyprus?

Accepted Answer

Net-Metering is a billing scheme where your solar system feeds excess energy back to the EAC grid. You receive credits for the energy you export, which offset your electricity consumption at different times. This means you only pay for your "net" consumption (usage minus solar production). It's ideal for homes that consume energy throughout the day and want to maximize savings without batteries. The system requires EAC approval and proper metering equipment.

Question 8

What is Net-Billing (Self-Consumption) in Cyprus?

Accepted Answer

Net-Billing, also called Self-Consumption, is a scheme where you primarily use the solar energy you generate directly in your home. Any excess energy can be sold to EAC at a wholesale rate (typically lower than retail prices). Unlike Net-Metering, you don't get 1:1 credits. This scheme encourages battery storage to maximize self-consumption and is better suited for homes with high daytime energy usage or those wanting energy independence with battery backup.

Question 9

What is an inverter and what are the different types?

Accepted Answer

A solar inverter is the brain of your solar system - it converts DC electricity from your panels into AC electricity that your home appliances use. Modern inverters typically come with **10-year warranties**, with premium brands offering extensions up to 25 years.

There are four main types available:

**1. String/Grid-Tie Inverters**
Traditional and cost-effective. One inverter handles your entire system. Best for unshaded roofs with consistent panel orientation. Premium brands: **Fronius, SMA, SolarEdge**.

**2. Microinverters**
Each panel has its own inverter. Best for complex roofs with shading issues. Higher upfront cost but better panel-level monitoring and optimization.

**3. Hybrid Inverters (Highly Recommended)**
The most versatile option - works with grid power AND battery storage. Key benefits:
- **Future-proof**: Add batteries anytime without replacing your inverter
- **Seamless backup power** during outages
- **Maximized self-consumption** with smart load management
- **Time-of-use optimization** to charge batteries during cheap rates
If there's any chance you'll want batteries in the future, choose a hybrid inverter from the start to avoid expensive retrofitting.

**4. Off-Grid Inverters**
Designed for complete independence from the grid. Requires battery storage. Ideal for remote locations or those seeking complete energy independence.

**Warranty considerations:**
- Standard warranty: 10 years (most premium brands)
- Extended warranty: Up to 25 years available
- Fronius, SMA, and SolarEdge offer some of the best after-sales support

Question 10
